Rettie’s Wake
John Rettie, journalist, campaigner and Friend of the Chernobyl Children, died in January 2009.
Best known for breaking the story of Kruschev’s speech in 1956, John worked for the Guardian and the BBC in Russia, Sri Lanka, India and Latin America. He travelled widely and spoke at least six languages. After retirement he spent time working with local history and campaigning groups. He was a member of the local Children of Chernobyl group and visited Chernobyl some years after the accident.
After a private family funeral, local friends attended a ‘wake’ in June held near his grave and then (of course) in the local pub.
This painting represents that day and it seemed like a good idea to do a print run in support of the Chernobyl Children.
All profits from print sales will go to the Chernobyl Children.
